Even at 53, Valley Stream resident Sarajean Grainson had a biological clock that never stopped ticking.

And now, six weeks after the birth of her twin sons, she wants women to know that it's never too late to be a mom.

After speaking to a 40-year-old friend who underwent in-vitro fertilization, Sarajean decided that the procedure was the best choice for her. To increase the chances of a pregnancy, she was implanted with two donor eggs from East Coast Fertility, a clinic in Plainview, in April 2006, and gave birth to a son, Luke, that December.

She and David went back to East Coast Fertility in September of 2008, hoping to give Luke a younger sibling. This time three donor eggs were implanted, and two of them turned out to be viable. The Grainsons were told they were having twins. "I was in shock," Sarajean said. "I was hysterical crying."

When I was 30, I was diagnosed as infertile. My doctor told me that I could never get pregnant naturally, and strongly cautioned me not to attempt pregnancy with fertility treatment, as I would never be able to carry a baby past six months.

So at age 44, when I started to feel sick, my various doctors attributed my ailments to early menopause and other conditions related to aging. Six months, numerous X-rays, CAT scans, prescription hormones and a slew of doctors later, I was raced to an emergency CAT scan for a large abdominal tumor — which turned out not to be a tumor at all.

I was six months pregnant.

(23/2/2003) A grandmother of 52 has given birth to triplets without having fertility treatment.

Antonietta Mellone, who already has three grown-up children, gave birth to two girls and a boy seven weeks early in a Naples clinic.

Last night the babies, Gabriele, Alessia and Nunzia, were all in incubators at a special care baby unit. Their weights ranged between two and nearly four pounds.

Italian doctors said they knew of no other woman of this age who had given birth naturally to triplets. 'This is an exceptional medical event,' said Professor Carmine Nappi, head of the Naples maternity unit.
