  • Scary Down's Syndrome Statistics?

Personally I find the statistics we get about Down's Syndrome somewhat confusing. So I translated them into percentages. I think it is all too easy to think of 1-80 as one in 80%, but it is not. 1-80 translates to 1.25 % for DS, or 98.75% chance of NOT having Down Syndrome... Maternal age as

When I started collecting these stories, I was just looking for 100 stories to back up my argument that pregnancy & birth over 44 years old, was not as uncommon as the media leads us to believe. Of course, for some, it may be too late without medical help. But it's not impossible for everyone, which is what I was being told - over and over and over again!

Who knew that it would grow into a mission, and take on a life of it's own? So many have posted the link on websites and forums all over the world - and for that I am grateful.

So I thought I would delve into my stats today, and tell you just some of the sites that have helped to bring my stories to the weary souls trying to have a baby "despite all odds"! As of today, the stories blog has had 19,134 hits.

Many hits are from the link in my sig.file in my forum postings. Here's a sampling:
Fertility Friend forum
TTC - Pregnancy - Parenting Past 50
Blogging Baby blog
Breast vs. Bottle forum
TTC Over 40 forum
Fertility Over 40 forum
Women over 40 with HIGH FSH forum

This is not a complete list, but today's hits also came from:
Older Moms on Yahoo Groups
You Can Get Pregnant Over 40, Naturally forum
Trying to Conceive forum
Care Fertility forum
She Knows forum
Suite 101
Conceiving Concepts forum

The following list is not a complete list - but rather is a selection of blogs that have been kind enough to link up to me:
Infertility - Fertility Over 40
Antique Mommy
Churp, Churp
Shinny Laboo and baby too?
When Eggs Go Bad...
Babylust
Inhospitable

And of course, the original site of my stories, which as of today has had 70,298 hits:
2,361 Stories of Pregnancy and Birth over 44 years old

Thanks to all the above sites for sending quite significant traffic to read these stories. And thanks everyone who has helped spread the word! I acknowledge each one of you as pivotal in spreading the word and sincerely thank you all.

I hope my readers are finding the stories helpful.

TODAY'S BOOK SUGGESTION:
Image: What I Thought I Knew: A Memoir, by Alice Eve Cohen. Publisher: Viking Adult (July 9, 2009)What I Thought I Knew: A Memoir
by Alice Eve Cohen
--A personal and medical odyssey beyond anything most women would believe possible

At age forty-four, Alice Eve Cohen was happy for the first time in years.

After a difficult divorce, she was engaged to an inspiring man, joyfully raising her adopted daughter, and her career was blossoming. Alice tells her fiancé that she's never been happier. And then the stomach pains begin.

In her unflinchingly honest and ruefully witty voice, Alice nimbly carries us through her metamorphosis from a woman who has come to terms with infertility to one who struggles to love a heartbeat found in her womb - six months into a high-risk pregnancy.

What I Thought I Knew is a page-turner filled with vivid characters, humor, and many surprises and twists of fate.

With the suspense of a thriller and the intimacy of a diary, Cohen describes her unexpected journey through doubt, a broken medical system, and the hotly contested terrain of motherhood and family in today's society.

Timely and compelling, What I Thought I Knew will capture readers of memoirs such as Eat, Pray, Love; The Glass Castle; and A Three Dog Life.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
